ENQUANTO ISSO ...

Top Brazilian hospital builds bridges between research and clinic -

... Hospital Sírio-Libanês is also one of six healthcare facilities in Brazil contributing to a private-public partnership to advance the country’s public health system, called the Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS). The largest government-run system of its kind in the world, SUS is free for all residents and visitors, supporting the healthcare needs of more than 130 million people.

Rachel Riera, a rheumatologist, oversees many of these projects as the coordinator of the hospital’s Health Technology Assessment Center (NATS) — a branch tasked with keeping clinicians informed of the latest scientific breakthroughs, incorporating innovations developed at Hospital Sírio-Libanês into SUS, and informing science policy and law in Brazil through partnerships with the National Council of Justice (CNJ), the Brazilian Regulatory Agency for Supplementary Healthcare (ANS), and the Ministry of Health. Riera evaluates each new technology based on its effectiveness and safety, whether it outperforms the current standards of care, and its financial impact on patients and health systems.

“I'm very proud of this work,” Riera says, adding that even though she’s employed by the hospital, the vast majority of her time is spent on projects that support SUS. “Hospital Sírio-Libanês is one of the best private hospitals in Brazil, but our innovation also delivers for the population, for health education, for the public health system.”

Hospital Sírio-Libanês will continue to expand its educational offerings and push in new directions. Fields like artificial intelligence and precision medicine are changing the scientific landscape, Camargo says, making it a particularly exciting time. “We will always innovate to meet the challenges of the future,” she says. “We stand ready."
